Hazel Chapman Death, Cause Of Death – Some sad news today as Hazel Chapman, Co-Founder of Lotus and wife of the great Colin Chapman has passed away at the age of 94. Hazel worked on the very first Lotus, the Lotus Mark 1 built around an Austin 7 alongside Colin in a garage at her parents old house and when Colin was drafted into the RAF she undertook it’s development, as well as it’s successor, the Mark 2
Further commissions for cars followed and they formed the Lotus business in 1952. As Lotus grew she joined the Board of Directors of, among other companies the Lotus F1 Team. Hazel was the matriarch of the successful team as they took 7 Constructors Championships and 6 Drivers Championships during the 1960s and 1970s, with such drivers as Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jochen Rindt, Emerson Fittipaldi and Mario Andretti.
She worked with every driver named above, as well as some of the other greatest names in Formula 1; Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Elio de Angelis, Ronnie Peterson, Carlos Reutemann, Nelson Piquet and Jacky Ickx to name but a few. After Colin Chapman died in 1982, Hazel played an instrumental role in the equity sale to the British Car Auctions group to safeguard the future of the brand and the F1 team, until the family sold the remaining elements of team in 1990.
