Roman Ivan Kokhanevych Death, Cause Of Death – Gresham Police identified the officer and Multnomah County sheriff’s deputy that fatally shot a bank robbery suspect after a pursuit on Tuesday night. Gresham Police Officer Mark Smith and Multnomah County Sheriff’s Deputy Chad Phifer are both on paid critical incident leave, as per protocol in deadly force incidents.
According to authorities, reports came in at about 4:40 p.m. of a robbery at the Key Bank in the 2600 block of Southeast Burnside Street. Based on witness descriptions of the getaway vehicle, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office deputies spotted the suspect’s SUV in Troutdale shortly before 5 p.m.
The suspect – later identified as Roman Ivan Kokhanevych, 24, of Portland – drove off and law enforcement gave chase. At one point, officials said Kokhanevych opened the driver’s door and fired at the pursuing officers.
