Police searching for armed suspect near Sherman Oaks Ralphs

On Friday afternoon, the Los Angeles Police Department was searching for an armed person near or inside Ralph’s home in Sherman Oaks.

According to police, a man pointed a gun at someone near the 14500 block of Ventura Avenue around 2 p.m. Friday. When police arrived at the scene, the man entered the parking lot of a business. The live SkyFOX showcased multiple LAPD vehicles centered on the parking lot entrance on Hazeltine Avenue.

Police have not released a detailed description of the suspect.

Late Wednesday, Jan. 12, firefighters found downed charging power lines near a blaze that destroyed an empty shopping center on Sherman Oaks Ventura Avenue, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said.

A larger alarm blaze was reported at 10:48 p.m. At 15033 Ventura Blvd., west of Kester Avenue. LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said first responders saw thick smoke coming from the building when they arrived.

A total of 75 firefighters put out the “deep” fire, Stewart said. The roof of the structure collapsed when crews used hoses to spray water from a safe distance.

Crews managed to stop the fire from spreading to a building to the west. It took an hour and 20 minutes to put out the big spark. Afterwards, they stayed on site to attack hotspots and clear debris.

About 20 minutes after firefighters initially responded, LAFD officials reported finding a “charging, collapsed power line” north of the mall. It was unclear Thursday whether they were the cause of the fire.

The building, which was vacant at the time of the fire, once housed a tailor shop, hair salon, nail salon, smoke shop and shoe repair shop. In a photo taken last December, it was fenced off with barbed wire, and its doors and windows were covered in planks and graffiti.

No one was injured and no nearby buildings were damaged, Stewart said.

Stewart said arson investigators were looking into the blaze, which is standard for a fire of this size.
